Author Biography
Originally from San Diego, California, Jeffrey Swartwood has lived in France since 2000. Having worked in secondary education and the surf industry before completing his PhD on hybrid societal constructions in Colonial California, he is currently a, Associate Professor at Université Bordeaux Montaigne and a member of the research group CLIMAS (EA4196), as well as Co-Editor of Leaves. Author of the book Contested Territories: Mixed Identity Constructs and Hybrid Culture in San Diego, California (MSHA 2015) and numerous articles, his research focuses on American civilization, particularly Californian culture and Southwest Border Studies. His work notably explores the role of the Mexican border in the development of regional and international surf culture, the origins of surf fiction and documentation, and the representation of women in 20th-century surf culture.
