Jean-Paul Gabilliet is Professor of North American Studies and Comics History at Université Bordeaux Montaigne, France. His research focuses on the cultural history of comics and illustration in North America and Europe, fields in which he has published more than seventy scholarly articles. He is the author of Of Comics and Men: A Cultural History of American Comic Books (University Press of Mississippi, 2010), as well as several books on leading figures of the American underground comix movement, including R. Crumb, Vaughn Bodē, and Gilbert Shelton. In 2020, he founded the Master's program Comics: Publishing, Theory, and Criticism at Université Bordeaux Montaigne.
