Abstract

In 1607, César Oudin, one of the first French Hispanists, published a bi-directional bilingual dictionary for Spanish and French, the Tesoro de las dos lenguas española y francesa / Tresor des deux langues françoise et espagnolle. This work was a great success and gave rise to many successive editions, the last being that of 1675. The study we propose focuses on the entries in the “Spanish-French” part of this dictionary which are devoted to the eating habits of the Spanish of the 17th century. By bringing them together and studying them as a whole, we hope to have succeeded in showing how César Oudin was able to convey to us an accurate and very complete picture of the eating habits and customs practised in this country at the time.
