Abstract

By describing the parties that were available for observation, specifically, 1) calendar events, e.g., New Year’s party, Christmas, and children’s festival, and 2) rites of passage, e.g., marriage, baptism, children’s and adult’s birthday parties, while conducting fieldwork among the Kale (a Gypsy group) in Mamanguape on the north coast of Paraíba, Brazil, during the years 2013 and 2014, we propose that the celebrations are privileged moments for the performance and updating of becoming Gypsy through dialogical relations of opposition to juron (non-Gypsies). These are parties that perform abundance, ostentation, and scarcity as a discourse, especially in the presence of foreigners or others. In this sense, the party is regarded as a social producer, dialoguing with the literature that advocates the “party as perspective”, that is, not as a mirror but instead as a creative function of reality.
